Loot Crate Subscription Review

About Loot Crate

Loot Crate was founded to inspire a broad spectrum of fans. At regular intervals, Loot Crate sends out boxes of unique pop culture items to its customers. The subscription boxes are curated for gamers and nerds, so if you’re one or both, Loot Crate is the place for you.

Loot Crate was named America’s fastest-growing company by Inc. in 2016, but hit a rough patch and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019. Since then, Loot Crate has bounced back, shipping its loot boxes to 29 countries around the world.

In this Loot Crate subscription review, we’ll look at Loot Crate’s products, pricing, promotions and fan opinion to help you decide if you should join the Loot Crate community.

Overview of Loot Crate

Loot Crate was founded in 2012 by Chris Davis and Matthew Arevalo with the goal of giving fans another way to enjoy the things they love. There’s a reason why this Loot Crate subscription review is so vague about the fandoms Loot Crate caters to: there are SO many. There are 21 different boxes to choose from, many of which contain products from various movie, book, TV, comic book, or game series – you name it, Loot Crate probably has it.

Loot Crates are designed to be a fun and exciting surprise. You may have a vague idea of what will be in the box, such as a Batman t-shirt, but you’ll never know exactly what everything will look like. Plus, Loot Crate always has little surprises up its sleeve, such as a box that turns into a proton pack (!). This Loot Crate subscriber review didn’t even know we had this technology.

It’s all about letting fans enjoy (and engage with) what they love, and this Loot Crate subscription review loves that. The boxes arrive like gifts and Loot Crate welcomes any feedback to make sure they’re giving their customers the gifts they want. The Loot Crate community grew and grew, but then, in 2019, there were some difficulties that drove Loot Crate into bankruptcy.

Loot Crate Bankruptcy

In August 2019, Loot Crate filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, claiming to have $30 million in debt and another $20 million in customer orders that had not yet been shipped. The company sold to a lender, Money Chest LLC, which provided $10 million to help Loot Crate through the bankruptcy process. After the bankruptcy, Loot Crate resumed shipping loot boxes.

This process has certainly taken a toll on them, and they need the encouragement of fans. So if Loot Crate sounds like something you like, it might be worth signing up to give the company a boost. There are also some offers they are using to entice customers.

Benefits

  • A unique subscription overall and in terms of the individual goods
  • It’s hard to judge the price for such a unique product, but Loot Crate usually (not always) gives a box value, which is usually $10-$15 over the box price
  • Great for collectors
  • Fans who rate a Loot Crate subscription love the experience
  • Wide range of crates to choose from
  • It really sounds like a lot of fun

Cons

  • If you don’t like everything in the crate, the price gets pretty high quickly
  • It’s only collectibles and apparel (you don’t get the movie or game, etc.), so it’s more of a niche product
  • There were a lot of concerns about the quality of the boxes and delivery delays at the time of bankruptcy
  • The return policy is vague at best

How Does Loot Crate Work?

  • Select the box you want
  • Select how long you would like to subscribe for (subscriptions typically run for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and are delivered either monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly depending on which you choose)
  • Select your shirt, shoe and waist size (depending on which sizes are required for your box)
  • Enter your shipping address, pay and proceed to checkout.
  • Receive your box and enjoy it

There’s also the option to skip a month on certain crates if you’re traveling or don’t like that month’s crate. This simply moves the invoice date to the next month. You can only skip monthly boxes.

Loot Crate Boxes

And now for the good stuff. There are four categories of Loot Crate boxes:

  • Pop Culture
  • Film + Television
  • Games
  • Limited Edition

Within each of these categories there are a number of options. Each Loot Box contains goods that are only available in that Loot Box and cannot be re-purchased. This is all designed to increase the excitement of receiving the box and increase the collectible value.

Pop Culture

The Pop Culture Box is perhaps the riskiest, but also the biggest surprise. There are many things that can fall under the term pop culture, and Loot Crate tries to cover most of it. Rather than limiting itself to one series or movie, each Pop Culture Box is organized by theme. For example, the current (until September 9, 2020) box is the TRAVELERS box, which includes items from Doctor Strange, Star Trek and Back to the Future.

The only product advertised is a Forward Temporal Demodulation Coil from Back to the Future. If you’re interested in the Pop Culture box, you probably know a lot more about it than this Loot Crate subscription review, so we’ll just leave that topic aside. In the past, there have been other items like a mini Frodo figure in a Loot Crate Lord of the Rings edition.

The LootCrate box is the original, but there are others in the pop culture category. LootCrate DX is an expanded version of the original with more items and a different theme. Currently it’s a medley of Venom, Black Widow, Beetlejuice and Fallout.

LootAnime is the anime box (currently My Hero Academia). LootFright has a horror theme (currently A Clockwork Orange). Finally, there’s LootSci-Fi, currently Back to the Future and I’m not sure, but it looks like you get a model of the Delorean!

What’s special about the Pop Culture category is the LootWear box, which contains a single item of clothing (the price depends on the item), and the LootRemix box, which contains a selection of past items. This is the only way to get old items new, but it’s a lottery if you’re looking for a specific item.

The prices and billing methods for the Pop Culture Box options are as follows:

  • LootCrate ($25, monthly)
  • LootCrate DX ($50, monthly)
  • LootWear (price varies, monthly)
  • LootAnime ($29, monthly)
  • LootFright ($29, bimonthly)
  • LootSci-Fi ($40, quarterly)
  • LootRemix ($15, monthly)

The Pop Culture Box has less of a specific theme, but offers a variety of items. It’s a little risky, but also lucrative. Some boxes can disappoint, others delight. They also offer options for Loot Crate anime and horror that aren’t available elsewhere. On the other hand, if you love the idea of Loot Crate but aren’t sure which series you want, the Pop Culture box is the way to go.

Film + TV

The Film + TV category has more specialized boxes. Each is organized around a single franchise and each box has a theme loosely related to that franchise. For example, the current Harry Potter Loot Crate has the theme Room of Requirement. The theme of the current Marvel Gear + Goods box is the favorite of this Loot Crate subscription test. It’s yellow, and – you guessed it – the products are yellow.

The non-pop culture categories are newer and so it’s hard to say how long Loot Crate will be able to sustain the more specific boxes, but the movie + TV box options have pretty wide-ranging themes. Perhaps a Lord of the Rings Loot Crate will appear again in the future.

With the per-box pricing and shipping schedule, the options in the Movie + TV category are as follows:

  • J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World ($40, bimonthly)
  • Marvel Gear + Goods ($40, bimonthly)
  • Deadpool ($40, quarterly)
  • WWE Slam Crate ($35, bi-monthly)
  • Hello Kitty ($40, bi-monthly)
  • Rick and Morty ($40, quarterly)

The advantage of the movie + TV box options is that you have a better idea of what you’re getting. So if you’re a big fan of any of these franchises, you can look forward to products like the Deadpool Maximum Effort Gym Bag or a scarf from one of the Hogwarts Houses in the Wizarding World Loot Crate.

Gaming

The “Games” category offers something similar to the “Film + TV” category, but in the area of games. There are four that focus on individual game franchises. You can expect boxes organized around the stores of Tamriel in Mercantile from The Elder Scrolls Loot Crate, or a Radscorpion figurine from the Fallout Loot Crate.

There is also a generic LootGaming box that offers gaming fans the unpredictability of pop culture boxes. Past boxes have included a Halo Loot Crate. Currently, it has a Schooled! theme and includes an exclusive Apex Legends mug. On one side it says in big letters: You got schooled! So if you teach someone a lesson, the mug can do it for you!

There was an equipment box, but Loot Crate has discontinued it. Soon there will be the Destiny box. The Wizkids Games option is unique in that you get a new game (map or board) each time instead of collectibles. This Loot Crate subscription review doesn’t have details on it, but the game crates are as follows:

  • LootGaming ($29, monthly)
  • Fallout ($35, bimonthly)
  • The Elder Scrolls ($50, quarterly)
  • Destiny (coming soon)
  • Wizkids Games ($20, bi-monthly)

Within the games category, the choice is yours. If you have a favorite, you should definitely choose that one, but you can also opt for the excitement of the general LootGaming box if you’re feeling daring.

Loot Crate Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Imagine receiving a box of collectibles for something you really love, and that excitement is what customers report both on their website and in Reddit Loot Crate reviews. Customers love the surprise of receiving the boxes and the unique products they contain. In this Loot Crate subscription review, it all sounds like an extremely fun experience.

However, there were also some concerns. In critical Loot Crate Reddit reviews, there are two main criticisms: Shipping and quality. The complaints about shipping are easy to diagnose. They mainly stem from when Loot Crate was struggling with debt and fell behind on shipping. Otherwise, there are still some shipping complaints, but they are rare. Loot Crate gives a wide range (10-15 days) for when shipments arrive, so if one comes at the beginning of the window and the next at the end, there could be frustration.

Quality is another issue. Again, the issue starts around the time Loot Crate got into trouble, but the complaints tend to be that the quality declined, the boxes contained fewer items than expected and items were repeated, frustrating those who value the exclusivity of the items. With Loot Crate’s finances, this seems to have improved, but it’s worth being a little cautious.

Is Loot Crate Worth It?

Overall, Loot Crate is more of a niche product. It’s meant for fans, for those who are passionate about the things in the boxes, as Loot Crate calls it. The investment is not negligible, so you need to be sure it’s something you like, but if so, this Loot Crate subscription review concludes that it seems like a great way to get an exciting surprise every month, two months or three months.
