Overview of Besame Cosmetics
Besame Cosmetics was founded in 2004 by Gabriela Hernandez, a designer and cosmetics historian. By the way, how cool does “cosmetic historian” sound? Sample syllabus, please.
Gabriela Hernandez’s goal was to take the simplicity of her grandmother’s beauty routine and bring classic elegance to the modern world of cosmetics. I too have a fashionable grandmother. I already love this origin story.
Gabriela and her family own and operate the company out of Glendale, California. Besame Cosmetics manufactures locally in Los Angeles, California, focusing on quality ingredients and clean beauty.
Unlike most companies that offer an extensive range, Besame Cosmetics puts together a relatively small range of lipsticks, eye shadows, mascaras, blushes, powders and accessories.
Besame’s makeup colors are reproductions from the last century – starting with vintage makeup from estate sales, auctions and antique stores. The company then recreates the colors and textures with pure ingredients to match the originals.

Besame Vintage Lipstick Review

Besame’s lipsticks are triple pigmented to create rich shades with a long-lasting, satin finish and a subtle vanilla flavor (ok, yummy). They contain vitamin E, squalane and aloe. The Besame Vintage lipsticks include 15 shades priced at $24, as well as a mini trio set for $15.
Besame lipsticks range from neutral pink and magenta to deep red, bright orange and sultry maroon. The lipsticks have a soft sheen and are packaged in attractive gold tubes with vintage-style rounded caps.
One of the most interesting elements of the Besame lipsticks is that each lipstick is linked to a year in the past. There is a short quiz on the website that allows you to find out the shades that match your skin tone, hair color and desired uses.
To create a thorough test of Besame lipsticks, I took the quiz. Besame recommended neutral shades of pink, coral and mulberry for my olive skin, brown eyes and dark brown hair. Pretty informative for a 2-minute quiz, give or take.
This review of Besame lipsticks contains a mixture of my own musings, my passion for the story and information from each product page. I’ll take you on a journey through the most popular lipstick colors between the
The ‘20s: Deep and Daring

We call them the “Roaring Twenties”, and they really were. An economic boom, Prohibition, flappers sneaking into speakeasies, parties worthy of the Great Gatsby. The ladies let their souls soar, and their lips showed it with a soulful, warm-toned red.
The deep, sensual tone of Bésame Blood Red (1921) goes well with sparkling jewelry and daring dresses that are shorter than ever. Va-va-voom, indeed.
The ‘40s: Bright and Bold

After the hardships of the Second World War, women longed for brighter, more optimistic tones. The war brought thousands of women into the workplace, where some stayed. Others felt the pressure from society to resume their duties at home (yikes).
The new freedom on the work front – or the yearning for more – gave women the confidence to wear bold shades like Besame American Beauty (1945). This bright and romantic berry shade with magenta undertones continued the trend towards femininity.
The ‘60s: Pretty in Pink

If, like me, you prefer a natural look for every day, the softer shades of pink from the 1960s may be more your style. Besame Portrait Pink from 1963 is a flattering neutral shade that you can wear during the day and evening.
During this decade, women in America were mesmerized by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and cosmetic companies capitalized on the craze. Mrs. Kennedy actually wore shades similar to this one. How do I know this? I watched a lot of Mad Men.
As the decade progressed, the color pink still prevailed. Besame Dusty Rose (1969) is a dark, purplish pink. If you like those shades, the Beatles and all that peace and love stuff, you might actually belong in that era.
Besame Lipstick Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
Besame makeup is celebrated online, and most customers seem to be satisfied with the product performance, especially for lipsticks. Reviews of Besame lipsticks show that shoppers love the smooth feel, vanilla flavor and shades that complement their features.
On the company’s website, the most popular lipsticks have near-perfect ratings of 4.8 and 4.9/5 stars based on over 1,000 customer reviews. One review calls Besame the “perfect lipstick formula,” and many others share similar sentiments. These examples of Besame lipstick reviews show just how satisfied shoppers are:
- Red Velvet: “I love the classic feel of this color and the scent is so soft and nostalgic. Definitely one of my favorite lipstick colors.”
- Chocolate Kiss: “The formula is moisturizing! But this lipstick is hands down my absolute favorite. I use this lipstick all the time! It goes with all my outfits and my warm skin tone.”
- Blood Red Lipstick: “This is a really beautiful color and the texture and subtle vanilla scent are gorgeous. It wears well and is comfortable.”
- American Beauty: “A hard-to-find red with blue undertones. Please, never stop making them! I have olive skin, brown eyes and chestnut blonde hair. This lipstick is the one.”
Besame’s lipstick also scores pretty well on other websites. MakeupAlley users give the brand 4.4/5 stars out of 540 reviews. Amazon customers also give the lipstick 4.5/5 stars out of 732 reviews.
The occasional Besame lipstick review complains of problems with color, texture or undelivered items. Besame consistently responds to these comments on all websites and encourages shoppers to contact customer service. These negative reports are rare and far outnumbered by positive experiences.
Is Besame Cosmetics Worth It?
Besame lipstick is the pinnacle of vintage cosmetics. We think it’s a worthwhile investment, provided you have the budget for it. Even though they are a little more expensive, this makeup is of much higher quality than cheap drugstore brands.
While the collection is limited, Besame’s lipsticks are very diverse, ranging from neutrals to bold shades in the hottest colors. The company gets extra points for its cruelty-free, sustainable and healthy ingredients. If you have sensitive skin and struggle to find lip products that work, Besame could be your solution.
An extensive test of Besame’s lipsticks revealed that the overwhelming majority of customers love, if not obsess over, their lipsticks. It’s only natural that there are some dissatisfied customers, but no cosmetic line is for everyone.
Another big selling point for Besame is historical accuracy. If you’re not into vintage, this lip line may not be worth it. If you are truly interested in authentic makeup from days gone by, Besame lipstick is a worthy tribute to the icons and lifestyles that influenced 20th century beauty.
